By the age of three, Amber was removed from her home where she was subject to abuse and neglect. Amber was bounced around in the foster care system and had sporadic interactions with her dad- whose rights were eventually terminated. Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms and suicidal thoughts now plague this young teen’s life. Relationships don’t come easy for her and her temper is short. A loving family has adopted Amber and she now has home stability in her life, but her journey toward healing still continues.
Amber’s second session at the ranch was filled with emotion as she began to share her story with her mentor. She talked about her anger, her dad, and the recent loss of the dog she loved. Tears began to flow down her face while her mentor simply listened. Prince, one of our equine partners, offered Amber his heart and hooves.

With great patience and sweet persistence, Amber worked toward cleaning each of his hooves, something Amber had heard was a “very satisfying” thing to do. With a great sense of accomplishment, Amber stood up after hoof #4 and beamed a broad smile declaring it was truly satisfying. The session finished off and it was time to head home, but before leaving Amber looked to her mentor with calm, soft eyes saying,
“Thank you for listening. It was just good to let it out.” Amber then said to her mom, “It’s going to be a good night.”
